This drawing is printed on an A3 (297mm x 420mm) paper size. It shows the assembly of the wheel nut retention system (Caterham F1 drawing number 14-LH-0107), designed by Florian Talou-Derible, for the Caterham CT05 Formula 1 car. Marcus Ericcson, Kamui Kobayashi, André Lotterer and Will Stevens raced Caterham CT05’s in the 2014 Formula One World Championship.
Florian Talou-Derible worked as a mechanical engineer for the Caterham F1 Team and now works as a freelance race and data engineer.
F1 FIA regulations require wheel nuts to be retained on their axles by a locking mechanism. The cone in the drawing houses spring activated pins that prevent the wheel nuts from coming off of the axles if they come undone. The wheel gun socket pushes the pins into the axle to allow the nuts to be fitted and removed. When the socket is removed to pins spring back out.
