Most racing cars use a single wheel nut to retain the wheels on the axles, to minimise weight and pit stop times. They have precisely machined pockets it, to match the 'teeth' of the sockets on the pneumatic wheel guns, to ensure that pit stops are quick and without mistakes. The left hand wheel nuts have a left hand thread are coloured red, whilst the right hand wheel nuts have a right hand thread are coloured green. Different handed threads are used on either side of the car to help to prevent them from coming undone when the car is on track.
